UBC (Ultimate Bowler Championship)
Since the book of Nuffle was rediscovered, and Blood Bowl was introduced, it has been a common debate at the tavern, sometimes ending in bloody brawls, which team and race is the Ultimate Bowler across all leagues. Not who can sneak in a tie now and again, and still win a league. Not about who can pass the longest, or kill the most. Or whatever someone won by skills or by being blessed by Nuffle. Not that these things were not discussions across brews all over the Old World…. Wait, those things, is discussed as often, and ending as well in Bloody Brawls. Come to think about it, anything related to Blood Bowl, ends in some bloody affair, ensuring that the apothecaries, will always be the highest paid profession.
But that’s not what this is about, so let’s move on. My point is, we are always trying to figure out who is the best Bowler. So I, Da’na Whiteknight, made it my Grail Quest to find, who was the Ultimate Bowler Champion.
Which League to pick from? Which Cup is the supreme? Official Ladder system, where a random team, come out of the dugout, to fight another random team, and somehow based on a mythical calculation becomes the champ?
No, my viewers and readers, that’s not how we do it in the UBC. We want to give you fame. We want to give you views. We want to make you the ULTIMATE BOWLER CHAMPION…and then see how long you can defend it.
I don’t do it for you. I don’t do it for me. I do it for the entertainment for our viewers (and the Gold they will pay to see it)
So are you ready to Rumble?
- Da’na Whiteknight
What is UBC?
It’s a ladder league, but instead of random match-up, it is a challenger system, with a Defending Champion, two contenders and every other player ranked from 4th rank and so on.
There is two way to enter. Either submit a team (see later about max. TV, and other qualifications), or compete in the Ultimate Bowler, which will be sanction from time to time.
Bi-weekly, UBC fights will be announced, set up by the UBC commissions and the team’s, divided in to One Main Event/UBC Champion Fight, up to 5 Main Cards (but never more than Under Cards), and several Under Cards.
After all fights have been conducted, an updated rank system will be posted, and you will find out how you or your favorite team is seeded in the UBC.
Technicalities
Each match will have 3 mins round, and will incl. over time etc, to establish a winner of each match.
Entry in to UBC
There is two way to gain entry in to UBC.
Submit a team
You can at any time submit a team to the UBC. The qualification is as following:
- Can only have played matches in any of the Iron Phoenix League (incl. Ultimate Bowler and UBC). If your team is from any other league, you can still get a permission to enter, after the commission have checked the legalities of that’s team matches.
- TV can’t be higher than the lowest TV of the Champion and either of the two contenders. Remember to incl. the value of Journeymen and gold above 100,000. If your team is too high in TV check back after each Event, as the teams and/or TV of the champion and contenders could have changed drastically. Please be aware, that for every player, that are able to level, but have yet to do so, a +50 TV will be added to your total.
If gaining entry this way, you will start at the bottom of the ladder.
The other way to gain entry is by;
The Ultimate Bowler
From time to time, we will have an Ultimate Bowler tournament. Please see that thread for more specifics.
After completing the Ultimate Bowler tournament, your team will be able to transfer directly in to UBC, and often much high ranked than entry by just submitting a team. What rank will be decided for each season, but the winner of the Ultimate Bowler tournament will always go directly to 4th rank of UBC, as the viewers want to see more (except for the first ever Ultimate Bowler Tournament, which set the basics for the UBC). The first winner of the Ultimate Bowler Tournament, will also be the first ever UBC Champ.
You are allowed to have more than one team in UBC. You can of course never challenge yourself. Also please keep in mind, that for every team you have, there will be a decent chance that each team will have a match pr. event.
Challenging Round
After all the fights of an Event, have been finalized, the challenging round begin.
To challenge is simple. When it has been posted, that we are ready to receive challengers, you can submit your bid on who you want to challenge.
You can only challenge Teams higher ranked than you. How far up you can challenge depend on your rank.
The lower rank you are, the more ranks you can skip over.
Who can challenge who:
Champ can't challenge. Can only defend the title against challengers.
1st Contender Can challenge the Champ
2nd Contender Can challenge the Champ and the 1st Contender
Rank 4 Can challenge the two Contenders
Rank 5 Can challenge rank 4 and the 2nd Contender
Rank 6-10 Can challenge anyone 1 or 2 ranks above them
Rank 11-20 Can challenge anyone up to 3 ranks above them
Rank 21-30 Can challenge anyone up to 4 ranks above them
And so on.
When you have decided who you want to challenge, send your challenge to ApollosWill, and your manager, lawyer, UBC commission and your mom, will decide what the faith of your team will be, whatever you will be the challenger, challenged or will not enter this event.
Please be aware, that UBC will be different compared to other league, ladders and knock out competition, in which; you are not guaranteed a match at every event. This is with intend, and hopefully this will make each one of your matches important and adrenalin rich (and the UBC will have a chance to play up your fight).
Negotiating Matches
Not all players will be interested in the following. Most will just want to know, what match they have next, and let the negotiation, be handled by others. Be free to jump to the next step.
But others want to know, what is going on behind closed doors.
After the dead line for submitting the challenges, all the challengers turned in, will be added to the negotiation table, and matches will be setup as following.
A player can be Red, Neutral (black) or Green, each indicated on the “Ranking of UBC”.
A player is Red, if he has been the challenger the last two matches.
A player is Green, if he for the last two matches, either haven’t (involuntarily) been able to play or been the one challenged.
The player that have highest priority to challenge, will be the Green player with the lowest Team Value (TV). The first match will be between him and the challenged. If two teams have the same TV, it will be the lowest rank first. Please be aware, that for each player you have, that are able to level, but yet have, a +50 TV will be added to your total, when calculating.
Next match, will be the next Green Player with the next lowest Team Value. If this player and the team he challenged have not yet been assigned to a match, this will be a match.
And so on, until the Green Player with the highest TV have been assigned to a match, o r put on hold (can still be challenged by the next group of players).
After that, it will be the Neutral group of players. Again, starting with the lowest TV, and working the way up. If two teams have the same TV, it will be the lowest rank first.
And last, all the players with red.
Yes, an example is needed;
Champ New Elf Patriots TV 2100
1st Contender Green Mean Packers TV 2000
2nd Contender Khermi Raiders TV 2200
4th Ranked Oakland SeaOrcs TV 1800
5th Leather Cowboys TV 1900
6th Buffalo Bulls TV 1100
7th Chaotic Bears TV 1400
8th High Elf Steelers TV 1300
9th Crimson Cardinals TV 1900
10th Pant are Browns TV 1200
11th Way Smaller than Giants TV 1300
12th Long tailed Jets TV 1000
The Following Challenges are as following:
Packers challenge Patriots
Raiders challenge Patriots
SeaOrcs challenge Raiders
Cowboys Challenge Raiders
Bulls Challenge Cowboys (someone would probably recommend, the Bulls to not challenge anyone, as they have a very low TV. That is possible too. Just don't send in a challenge. Just know you can still be challenged by a team below you)
Bears Challenge Cowboys
Steelers Challenge Bulls
Cardinals Challenges Steelers
Browns Challenge Steelers
Giants Challenge Steelers (remember rank 11-20, can challenge 3 ranks above them)
Jets Challenge Browns
After all the challenges have been submitted the commission will start figuring out which matches will be the ones for the next event.
First start with Green Players. We have the Bulls and Cardinals. Bulls have the lowest TV, so that challenge have priority. They challenged the Cowboys.
Match 1 will be Leather Cowboys vs. the challenger Buffalo Bulls
The Cardinals Challenged the Steelers, so
Match 2 will be High Elf Steelers vs. the challenger Crimson Cardinals.
After those matches, both the Bulls and the Cardinals will no longer be green as they have been a challenger in one of their last two matches.
Going on to the Neutral Players. The team that are neutral from lowest TV to highest; Jets (TV 1000), Browns (TV 1200), Giants and Steelers (Both have TV 1300, but Giants are lowest rank, and will be looked at first), SeaOrcs (TV 1800), Cowboys (1900) and Raiders (2200).
First, we take away the players that have already been set up in a match, which is the Cowboys and Steelers, and is down too;
Jets (TV 1000), Browns (TV 1200), Giants (TV 1300), SeaOrcs (TV 1800) and Raiders (2200).
First up is the Jets, which challenged the Browns. So;
Match 3 will be Pants are Browns vs. the challenger Long Tailed Jets.
Next is the Browns, but they just got a match, so we are moving to the Giants. They challenged the Steelers, but since the Steelers already got a match, the negotiation felt apart for the Giants, and they will have to hope, that someone challenged them, if they want to get a match this event.
Than we have the SeaOrcs. The SeaOrcs challenged the Raiders, so;
Match 4 will be Khemri Raiders vs. the challenger Oakland SeaOrcs.
Cowboys and Raiders now already have a match, so we can move on to the Red Players.
The Bears and The Packers.
The Bears challenged cowboys, which already have a match assigned.
The Packers challenged the Champs, and will be allowed to fight for the Crown.
Match 5 will be New Elfs Patriots vs. the challenger Green Mean Packers.
Two teams (Giants and The Bears) were unsuccessful in getting a match, they wanted or being challenged, and will have to sit out, until next time. If this was the 2nd time for the Giants or their last match was them being challenged, they will become a Green Team next event, with a bigger chance to get a match. The Bears will no longer be Red, as they did not get the opponent they challenged (but remember their two previous matches they played as a challenger).
Also note, that if this is the second-time Cowboys, Steelers, Browns or the Raiders have been challenged or they didn’t get a match previous event, they will become Green, which will increase the chance for them to be able to challenge someone the next event.
As it can be seen in the above, there is a little bit of strategy, when you decide who to challenge, in figuring out which opponent, will be the easiest to get, and perhaps even to block another player to move up past you.
Arranging Matches
After all matches have been announced, all players will get a PM both here on the forum and on steam (please add Apolloswill as a friend in steam), to inform you, that you have a match. Your team in BB2 will also receive a ticket for that match.
Please, as soon as you can, go to the forum, and try to set up the match with your opponent. This is done the same way, as any other league. It’s important to post times to the forum, for all to see, so if anyone want to watch, they are getting a heads-up. Also, this is useful, if a player does not show up or it seem impossible to arrange a match.
In case a match cannot be arranged between the two players, the player that gave the most availability, will be the winner, and move up on the ladder as such. The other player will move down as if they lost. If you were the one that gave the least availability, and it wasn’t enough to get the match arranged, the lost will be considered a Submission (see After the Match).
You are also allowed to Default the match, and let the other player take the win. Sometimes, you just find, that your team would be destroyed, if playing that match, and would prefer to just lose. But please inform all as soon as possible, so nobody is spending time on trying to arrange the match. On your record, you will get a submission lost (see after the match, how that will affect your ranking).
If you win by submission, without a match being played (the opponent defaulted/retired or a match couldn't be arranged), a 2-1 win will be set, and you will be awarded a MVP, SPP for two TDs and gold.
Please note, we really encourage you to try to play your match. It’s just much more fun.
Playing the Match
Remember each match is a match to the win with possible over time and penalties (remember, left-over rerolls, increase your chance to win the penalty round). It will be 3 mins round.
The big question in league and cup matches is often about whatever or not you can concede the match.
In UBC you can concede your match. UBC is a little bit different from other leagues, as there is a bigger chance, you will meet the same team again and soon. So, the free Gold and MVP you are giving that team, will most likely come back to haunt you again.
Also, losing in UBC, no matter your position, will hurt your ranking, so no one can ever "afford" a loss. And last, if you concede, it will be recorded as a submission. Always consider, if it’s worth it. Teams have been known to come back from being way behind after first half. And it feels frigging awesome.
After the Match
After all matches have been finalized, new ranks will be assigned. When the commission assign new ranks, they will start with the match with the lowest ranked Defending team and work their way up.
The following method is used to decide what new rank a team become (and in that order):
- If you lose your match, you will go down 3 positions (moving past three opponents)
- If you lost by submission, you will go down 4 positions (moving past four opponents)
- If you were the Defending team, and you won, you will stay in position
- If you were the Challenger, and you won, you will be moved in to the position the defending team had (just below the team, the defending team was under).
Please note, that other matches will also affect your rank, so you can be moved more or less than expected. You can even get moved, if you did not have a match.
Let’s use the matches from the above step, as an example;
Match 1 will be Leather Cowboys (5th ranked) vs. the challenger Buffalo Bulls. Cowboys Win
Match 2 will be High Elf Steelers (8th ranked) vs. the challenger Crimson Cardinals. Cardinals Win
Match 3 will be Pants are Browns (10th ranked) vs. the challenger Long Tailed Jets. Jets Win
Match 4 will be Khemri Raiders (2nd Cont.) vs. the challenger Oakland SeaOrcs. SeaOrcs Submit
Match 5 will be New Elfs Patriots (Champ) vs. the challenger Green Mean Packers. Patriots Win
When deciding, who to move first, we start with the lowest ranked match first, and work up. So each move, will be done in this order; Pants are Browns (10th) match, High Elf Steelers (8th) match, Leather Cowboys (5th) Match, Khemri Raiders (2nd Cont.) match and last New Elf Patriots (Champ) match.
The new UBC ranks will be as following;
Champ New Elf Patriots TV 2140 (stayed)
1st Contender Khermi Raiders TV 2220 (Up 1)
2nd Contender Leather Cowboys TV 1960 (Up 2)
4th Chaotic Bears TV 1400 (Up 3)
5th Green Mean Packers TV 1940 (Down 3)
6th Crimson Cardinals TV 1900 (Up 3)
7th Long tailed Jets TV 1050 (Up 5)
8th Oakland SeaOrcs TV 1740 (Down 4)
9th Buffalo Bulls TV 1120 (Down 3)
10th Way Smaller than Giants TV 1300 (Up 1)
11th High Elf Steelers TV 1340 (Down 3)
12th Pant are Browns TV 1220 (Down 2)
Please note that Bears moved up even without having a match (as a lot of the top challengers did not win), and the SeaOrcs, which had a submission, moved down the furthest. Also Long Tailed Jets moved up from bottom to middle of the rank in one match, showing, that winning can change your ranking (and popularity) real quick.
Other influence to Rank: Ultimate Bowler Entries and Teams returning from Absent or Retirement can also affect your rank. Please keep this in mind, as this is part of this league as well.
Absent and Retirement
Sometimes life calls for more attention or one of your team is either not able to recover, don’t have your interest or priority any more, and you want to retire the team or go on an absent with it.
Another circumstance is, that you wish to enter your team in to another Iron Phoenix league or cup. This is acceptable by the UBC commission, but before taking the absent, be certain that the administrator of the other league and cup, will allow your entrance to their league.
You are not allowed to take an absent to play any Open Matches, incl. Iron Phoenix Open Matches. This is to avoid any kind of abuse and/or avoiding MNG injuries. If you decide to play an open match with a UBC team, and later wish to return, your will return as if you came from an outside league. See below.
Every one of those reasons are acceptable. You can retire or take a break with any of your teams, but please make the commission aware by sending a PM to Apolloswill. Your team will be retired right after the last match have been played and before new challenges are accepted.
If you ever want to return the team, or your absent ends, just send a new PM to Apolloswill, and you will be added to the rank again.
The returning rank is based on your teams rank and popularity before you left, and how long you were gone.
For every Event your team skipped, you will move down one rank from where you left.
If you left, while being in the Top 10, you would have gained enough popularity, that you will never go down more than 5 ranks (and your Comeback match, will most likely sell ticket and create some positive PR for the organization).
To avoid conflict of interest (to be direct, Farming), you are not allowed to take an absent for a league or a cup outside Iron Phoenix. If the team still wish to return to UBC, you will have to submit your team as a new UBC team from an outside league. See Entry in to UBC

Let’s use the matches from the above step, as an example;
The new UBC ranks will be as following;
