I'm getting bored with my old defense set-ups. I always set up in an even defense spread across the middle of the field. I'm thinking of starting to set up defense more towards one side in the future. Apart from giving me a change of pace I'm expecting it to maybe even be better than my old even defense? (Seeing as to how seldom I win it seems that any change I make can't be worse...) I'm thinking that with an unbalanced defense you at least steer the opponent to one side. With an even defense I feel that I am always the last to know where the ball is going. And when the advance finally comes, one third of my team is on the wrong side of the field.
But I expect that there can be drawbacks to an uneven defense also of course. Apart from the obvious, like skaven gutter runners that one can't leave unattended on one side... what other dangers can I expect with an unbalanced defense?

This one skill alone made me rethink my defence. Obviously not an issue against everyone but when set up asymmetriccally frenzy has caused me a lot of issues, biggest one being a frenzied rat ogre causing two huge gaps that led to uncontested td. That said it could easily have just been me missing the obvious.

I set my defense up according the race i play, Example. If i am playing Khemri i set up a strong center, IF i playing Elf i set up a spread defence with as many tackle zones i can get. I all keep two blitzer one yard from the LOS incase i a blitze.
I tend not to put my big guys or ST in the LOS i use linemans for that. I like to keep my Higher ST players back a bit so they can be moved towards the play.

Yes Squiggy, good tip. Frenzy is of course good to be beware of. Mr Manco: That might be my problem, I use the same set up almost undependant of what race I play.

Yes Squiggy, good tip. Frenzy is of course good to be beware of. Mr Manco: That might be my problem, I use the same set up almost undependant of what race I play. Time to mix it up Ren, I must of spent around 100 games experimenting with defence. It is the key to the game. In the Leagues i play in i often have one of the best defences Currently in OCC i am unbeaten on MD6. In UKbBL in the season just ended i nearly won. Now i am not blowing my own trumpet, Just pointing out a strong defence gives you points. So defence practice is something that needs to be worked on. One of the best skills for defense is kick. Get it as soon as you can. If you playing a weaker strength team i tend to kick it short to the weakest flank. It forces him into making that ball safe, He has to set up a screen or cage near my players right away or if he fumbles getting the ball i am all over him. Also it gives me first blocks on the LOS. Don't be scared to put lineman in danger, Its their job and easy to replace. If i am playing a bash/High strength team I use Lineman on the LOS keeping my Positionals back so they can move to the area of action. Another great tip. Don't be too passive on defence, This was a major issue i had, Took me a long time to work out the reason i was losing so much was my to passive defence. Send two or three players after the ball, Be pressing!, You taking his game plan away from him then and putting pressure on. Force the other coach to play your game, You're in charge !!! I am getting a lot of 2-1 grind wins recently vs running and agility teams. Leave a channel open, Pressure the ball carrier and force them to go for the fast score. They will score or mess it up so you get the ball. Last season I score more defensive touchdown in Iron and UKBBL than any other team. Now i just have to work on offense as i am shit at it lol

Those are some very good tips. The kick-skill I have already learned is a good thing. I will try to be more bold in my defense experiments in the future. Thx for sharing.

It's all about speed of the opposition. If they are slow you can set up central. If they are fast I like 3 on the line, then 4 pillars of 2, blocking off the whole width of the pitch. I seem to remember there is some discussion on the merits of an asymmetrical defence in the Lizardmen guide. Pg16 www.plasmoids.dk/bbowl/playbooks/Lizardmen.pdf

If you had a Phoenix open or auld world team I've been experimenting with some asymettrical defence and offence orc setups and would love to see your responses and hear your thoughts of you have time one evening.

Most of my teams not in a league are in ORKS. If you enter a team there we can play. I of course was inspired by this discussion and tried earlier to test an unbalanced defense... ... First kick-off the fans stormed the arena and stunned 8 of my players and 1 of my opponents. Next 4 turns ended in failed dodges where the fourth one resultet in my player dying. Next 2 kick-offs, my opponent got blitz and fucked it all up... I remember now why I seldom play 'just for fun'....

@ren...
Talk with Jester. He had very good ideas when it came to off-balanced defensive setups. His Humans had a great setup!

Yes, that reminds me - I was on the receiving end of Jester's unbalanced defence in the Iron QF. I intend to steal that idea

Yeah he pulled something similar with his underworld in a Phoenix open game vs my orcs. Couldn't for the life of me figure out what he was doing til one double push meant my entire team were pinned turn one.
