I quickly found that it was better to arm yourself with a great weapon or two weapons than a shield, as you could just dodge instead. But I have found two reasons for why using a shield now and again, and wanted to share (I first found out the second one, so in case nobody else know, I wanted to get it out there);
- The obvious reason is if you are planning on wearing heavy armor (which reduce damage). Heavy armor penalize dodge a lot, so for you to have a useful defensive stand, you should go for parry. Shields add 10% to Parry.
- The second I first found out here in my last campaign match and makes Parry so much better. If you successfully Parry an opponent you get a free counter attack. So compared to dodge that "just" make the attack miss, you on top of that get to attack back against an opponent that is not set in defensive mode. Very effective aganst those agile skavens.

id say its down to what u want the person todo, if hes a melee killer then 2 weapons or a 2 handed weapon are the best, if he's to delay till help arrives then a shield may be better. if your a v agile race then dodging is prob better.

Its not a free parry, and in fact its not a skill limited to shields. If a player makes a parry then a counter costs 1 less OP normally making it 1OP. There are several methods for gaining op when counter attacking or parrying however though that's not hundred percent. Parry is better than Dodging because it provides this ability and can be combined with Armour (though Armour has many other concerns), HOWEVER and this is very important, anything using Armbands or Bracers CANNOT be parries there making your parry investment meaningless. Be aware also wielding a single handed weapon and keeping your off hand free provides a dodge and initiative buff so its a far closer overall effect. The solution? Mix dodge and Parry specialists for tying down (tanking) members of your warband. In my opinion though you actually missed the best potential aspect of a single weapon shield build: That a counter attack build with stacking critical chance and melee debuffs. Using a build like this at rank 10 a hero is able to achieve unsupported 9 attacks, via actions and counters which can all stack critical chance increase, critical resistance decrease and melee resistance decrease upon the victim meaning a 30% initial chance becomes 70-80% by 5/6 attacks and 100% by the end. This style of build can be made far stronger via leadership abilities and magical buffs. Anyway just something to think about.
