Congratulations to all the coaches who've made it through to the playoff rounds. I'm still waiting for all the teams to accept their tickets in-game, but here are the match ups for the quarterfinals. Feel free to start arranging times to play, but factor in our inability to start until all teams have registered.
rtsd’s Equinox Arcana (Undead 1960tv) vs. devifish’s Squibblies (Undead 1690tv)
RTSD has yet to drop a game all season – the team is living up to the pre-season hype, and all coaches have now seen why this squad boasts a 36-7-6 record in the hands of their decorated commander in chief. Every starting piece on the roster fulfils its function more than adequately, with skills up the whaaazooo, and the Arcana’s bench is deep. Devifish will have his work cut out for him in this mirror match, but he has a few handy tools of his own to get the job done. The Squibblies have made an impressive showing for themselves, fighting their way in to the playoffs and earning themselves some much needed levels across this developing team. His killer wight, str6 mummy, and the BC ghoul would have a welcome position in any undead coach’s roster. However, the Squibblies’ time on the pitch has not been without sacrifices; the last MD of the regular season saw their rising star AG4 blodge ghoul meet its maker prematurely. The team has hardly the time to mourn in their preparations for what may be the toughest of their careers, and they will have to make do without. A bucket of inducements may help to even the odds if Devifish can make some cunning choices pay off. A win here will surely put Devifish’s team on the map, but they’ll have to go through the juggernaut that is RTSD to get there. And I hear that’s a toll road.
zymotic’s Pull the Plug (Nurgle 1630tv) vs. nails’ Naillers (Dwarf 2100tv)
What a game for Zymotic to be missing two of his old faithfuls… the speedy tentacle beast is MNG, and the killer pestigor is no more thanks to a bloody thrown rock in the regular season. The squad is down to a bare bones 11, and when the going gets tough, we’ll see if these toughs can really get going. In the opposite corner, Nails’ team is looking as fit and healthy as ever. A couple of rookie longbeards might be the only ‘weak’ links, but even they have all the essential skills they need to hold their own. 240k of team value is sunk into the biggest death roller I’ve ever seen – and the monstrosity is 2 spp away from levelling again! If Nails is able to keep that thing on the pitch for even half the game, the field is gonna run red. Is $470000 worth of inducement money gonna be enough to make up for the missing pieces in Zymotic’s depleted roster? Only time will tell – game on gents!
havol’s Country Clubbers (High Elf 1470tv) vs. tector’s Khemri Cardinals (Khemri 1750tv)
The playstyles of these two teams and these two coaches couldn’t be any more different. Having met plenty of times before in their Silver days, there are no real surprises here about what the opposing coach will want to achieve, and what these teams are capable of. Each team has suffered the loss of their star players during regular season – the days of the stat freaks of the likes of the st7 tomb guard, and that ag6 elf are behind us, and coaches will have to re-focus on what they DO have left in their rosters to get the job done. While heavier in TV by far, the Khemri are much slower around the pitch, which can lead to a blow out if the elves get their way. But Hav’s thin 11 man roster could easily crumble under the pressure of many dusty boots if one of them happens to fall over in the wrong place at the wrong time. With the right/wrong dice, this could be anyone’s game.
weresquid’s Laphter (Skaven 1510tv) vs. blocki’s Rotten Blockers (Nurgle 1900tv)
Squid’s rat pack have been dodging and diving their way through everything group 2 could throw at them, coming up in first place with a slew of TD’s on the sheet. I suppose that’s what happens when the runners pin their ears back, and make a break for it – not a lot can stop them, though many have tried. In their way this time are the killer nurgle squad of group 1- Block’s Rotten Blockers. And what’s this? Their main killer is MNG for this game? Looks like the rats catch a break after all… but they’re not home and hosed yet – the nurgle’s secondary killer is almost as scary (albeit without tackle and pile on), and there IS still the problem of an str4 ball carrier surrounded by a whole lot of ugly tentacled muscle. Weresquid has been beating the odds all season, but is this gonna be one bridge too far? I bet Blocki’s bashers are licking their chops at all that rookie armour 7, but getting bogged down killing the expedient rats might create just the opening Squid is looking for to slip a couple of important rats through to score. And there is the 390k inducement load to consider…
