So while lamenting the lack of Laser Squad Nemesis and multi player/turn based/squad based combat games in general, I thought I would look up what the guy that made LSN (and original X-Com) had been up to recently. I was very pleasantly surprised! (I was expecting nothing for a start - last I heard he had taken a job working on chess games in Sofia) I think my pennies are already rolling out of my wallet... www.chaos-reborn.com/game-guideearly access at the mo though

So I waited until full release - and lo... I love it! Sell it to me:Wizards duelling. Multiplayer focused. You get dealt a random hand of cards(spells) that summon monsters, magic weapons, buffs/hexes, magic missiles. All your units can move and attack each turn - in any order. Oh and you can cast 1 spell. Then your go is done. (and you draw a new card) Every attack is either a kill or a miss... some people are going to hate this. It does make the game pretty quick though. 10 minutes? I would think league play would be best of 5 games or similar. Bit more detail:Powerful spell cards (summon a dragon) are only cast with 20% reliability. Weak cards (summon a gobbo) might be cast 90% of the time. Yes, it is a massive gamble, casting a high power spell. It is only mitigated slightly by the fact that you get some Mana back if you fail to cast. To further murken the waters, you can cast your spell as an illusion with 100% reliability. Illusions can attack just like the real creatures, but can be dispelled quite easily. If you get a real high level creature, you may also manage to trick your opponent into wasting a spell trying to dispel it. Conversely, you can sneakily cast your 90% spells as illusions, safe (well...) in the knowledge that your opponent definitely (maybe) won't risk a dispel illusion on something that is probably real... You get mana for killing enemies and reaching certain spots of the map. This can be spent to boost the chances of casting your spells by up to 20%, or, if you get a lot, you can get a "mega spell card". Poker and Chess combined. I really think BBers will love it. (but most other gamers will not) Is it slick?Yes. It took me about 5 minutes to work out how to play it, without bothering with tutorial. No bugs found. MultiplayerIs where it is at: 1 on 1 3 player free for all 4 player free for all 2 on 2 Live games or Asynchronous. (Wot's dat? You play your turn when you log in, then wait for your opponent to play his. When he is done, you can do your go. How useful for playing those PST Muricans and Aussies!) I want an IP league, so buy it! - it is also only about a tenner. ($20?) There is some stuff about levelling up your wizard, but I have not dabbled here yet, just been playing Classic mode. www.chaos-reborn.com/game-guide
